Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can be an effective treatment for gout because it raises the pH level of the blood, also known as 'alkalizing'. It enables the blood to hold more uric acid without formation of the dreaded uric acid crystals that lead to gout. Many gout sufferers use it to prevent an oncoming attack, however it does not work for everyone.

Use With Care
Baking soda can help with gout but beware that it can create side effects like high blood pressure, headaches, nausea, and others. It is very high in sodium so reduce salt intake while taking it as gout attacks and high sodium intake can raise blood pressure. People with heart disease, kidney or liver problems, or appendicitis should not take it without consulting a doctor. Baking soda can also interact with some medications so check for contraindications with anything you may be taking.
The blood is made up of acids and bases and can be measured on a pH scale. Taking too much baking soda for too long can cause alkalosis, which is when the blood pH is too high or 'base'. Baking soda is a powerful compound when released in the body and in practice should be used to stop a gout attack and not for everyday treatment.
How To Take Baking Soda for Gout
A 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda four times a day is the recommended maximum. Make sure that the baking soda is completely dissolved in at least 8 oz. of water. Also, do not take on a full stomach, this treatment works best before eating. Make sure to take the last dose before bedtime as the body is more acidic at night, which is when most gout attacks occur.
